Account Closed by HSBC

I opened a new bank account with HSBC last month.
I provided all my verification details (passport etc). Because my address is an old one on my passport I provided proof of address in the form on a bank statement, which was accepted, and the account was opened.
I received a letter a week or so later saying along the lines of ‘you need to provide address verification….if you have already done so please ignore this letter.’
Of course, I just ignored it because I had provided the information.
I’ve since been using the account for the last month since. transfered my wages, bills, DD's & SO's etc to go out of it...
Yesterday I found out my account had been closed with no prior warning other than the letter which i presumed i could ignore as it said.
I’ve been to branch today and what has happened is because the addresses are different on my passport and bank statement, somebody, somewhere along the line has made a !!!! up or got confused and closed the account because the addresses on the two forms of ID are different. They admitted it was their !!!! up, and i did provide all the details required, but they can’t reverse it because once an account is closed, it is so for good and cannot be reopened.
This account closure happened yesterday which happened to be pay day and as such my wages will be bouncing back and i'm left with no money, no bank accout to get it redirected to and no way of paying any of my bills!
After having a bit of a tantrum in branch at their incompetence, they told me they could offer me a new account but it may well be rejected because its down on their records that i've had an account with them closed in the past!
I told them to stuff it and I’ll take my business elsewhere. So I’m left without a bank account.
What are my rights here? Am i entitled to any form of compensation given that i'm going to incur charges on cards. bills, finance etc.

This is why it pays to have a back-up account - open something like a Barclays cashcard account as a backup
As for compensation you should go down the official complaints route

When did passports start showing people's addresses?0
-
Your passport doesn't contain your address and you don't inform the passport agency even if you do move, I wanted to when I moved but they said it doesn't matter.
I used my passport to verify my identity with Barclays and I have moved since obtaining my passport. They never questioned it.
I would go back and double check!!0 -

Isn't it an offence to have the wrong address on your DL? Thought you were supposed to inform DVLA straight away. Are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation? :cool:0
