Redundant twice over - anyone help

Options
Hi, i have just been told that i have been made redundant and my employment with the company will end in august. This is the 2nd time i have been made redundant by them but last time we were offered alternative work this time we have no choice but to accept the redundancy. My main issue is that i will then be out work with no income (although my partner will be employed full time) but even so we stil have bills to pay as well as a mortgage and a 2 year old to look after who currently attends nursery at a cost to us of £150 a month for 1 day a week!!!! I have tried to find out if we are entitled to any help with our mortgage etc but keep getting told no as i am not a single parent and my partner works. I think this is terrible and cant be right just because we work and earn our living once we are out of work (through no fault of my own) we get no help! Can this be right??? Dont know what to do based on just getting job seekers allowance i will go from earning £850 a month to a measly ££90 odd a month - how can we survive on that? can anyone help???:(

If you need to keep your child in nursery is your partner able to claim the child care vouchers through his employer. You are able to claim up to £243 per month. This amount comes off your salary first so you do not pay tax and national insurance on it. Otherwise take your child out of nursery for the time being - saving £150.00 per month. Once they reach 3 you are able to claim the Nursery Education Grant from the term after their 3rd birthday so this is a little saving.

Make sure you start looking for new work as soon as possible. Your job does not end until August so time is on your side to an extent

    Good luck
Go round the green binbags. Turn right at the mouldy George Elliot, forward, forward, and turn left....at the dead badger
  • No my partner is not able to claim for the childcare through his job so therefore think our only option will be to stop her going until march next year when she turns three. I have started looking for jobs already but extremely awkward as need part time hours on certain days to work aroung family childcare arrangements. Such a nightmare losing this job.

Hi Emma - on the bright side you have quite a lot of time to look for work before your August finish date. You should be working on your CV and interview prep now and consider applying for perm jobs now as it can take 3-6 months (or worst case longer) to get that next job in the current climate as jobs often get put on and off hold several times during the process.

with regards to job seekers allowance it will be £64.30 a week from the new tax year so a little bit better than what you quoted above. Also you may qualify for additional tax credits which could also bump that figure up some more. Check out entitledto to see what you might be able to get from the government in a worst case scenario...

In the meanwhile save as much as you can and pay off as much debt as you can! Good luck!

well you could just ring your manager and say you've heard that there might be redundancies. Say you can't afford to volunteer because of benefit rules but you would happily go if you happened to be selected.... You may find it is music to their ears as it can be very uncomfortable selecting people for redundancy...

He could always suggest his company do this after all, they will save money too!
