First Direct Overdraft fees.

From April 1st 2009 you will not be debited with fees the minute you go overdrawn.
You will be notified, and debited 14 days later.

Just prolonging the agony isn't it?

No idea. I don't go over my limit as they text me if I'm getting close.
I presume they mean interest if you go over your agreed free overdraft limit and I don't know how much that is.

Well, you know, if you didn't expect to go overdrawn the notification will let you correct the situation and move enough money into the account to cover any fees before the charges are taken. So it should hopefully help you to avoid a situation where you slide further and further into the red before you are even aware that there is a problem.

    No.

Informal overdraft fees have always been prenotified - your statement or online banking has a little message saying that on such and such date, the following fees will be taken, blahdeblahdeblah. All that's changing (with HSBC too) is that formal arrangement fees, for increasing or creating a limit, are now subject to the same prenotification. Before, they used to just come out of your account a few days after the limit was set up - now, you'll be told when they're going to come out in advance.
  • FD charged me £25 for going £32 overdrawn for less than 24 hours but will not refund it as its in my t&cs blah blah blah.
