loo - leaking cistern

The cistern in my loo has what I assume is an overflow pipe for when the water level gets too high. I have a problem with it - it goes out of the bottom of the cistern and just stops - any overflow water goes all over the floor.

So - where should this be plumbed into?

Also, the reason it is dripping water is the cistern is filling too high after each flush - is this likely to be a ballcock problem?

Thanks
Still wish I could buy a TARDIS instead of a house!

Seen overflows routed to various places - back into the toilet bowl from behind the seat hinges - into the bath's overflow, outside (and even into an extension when the outside loo became an inside loo !)

It is likely to be a ballcock problem if the cistern is overflowing as that is the ballcock's purpose - to stop the water flowing into the cistern at the corrct level. Adjustment is done the end of the arm away from the "Ball" - look for a screw with a lock nut - extent the screw from the ballcock so it closes the valve sooner - tighten the locknut. If the valve still leaks when you pull up the ballcock then the valve needs a new washer - MSE advice don't use the plumber that says ballcock valves don't use washers and wants to replace the whole kit ...

Also seen the lid of the cistern stopping the ballcock raising so it can't shut he valve. HTH - but is not current Build regs as far as I know ...

I replaced the whole lot as my the cistern was filling up to much. It wouldn't stop running and the water poured out of the overflow outside. The part cost me less than £3. I turned off the water at the toilet and took the broken bit out and took it down to our local DIY. They didn't have the part that had gone so they suggested replacing the whole bit. It's easy enough to do. I'm not a DIYer but I do have a B&Q book. I'm sure you can find how to replace it somewhere on the net. :)

If I can do it anyone can.

Either the ball is set too high or there is a problem with the washer.

Overflow outlets are set so that it can be seen when the overflow works. warer board regs.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
