Tax Code shock!!

Hello all,

I started work on 2nd March 2009 and received salary in my account yesterday. I work part time and expected to receive about £540 after tax, NI and pension was taken. I actually received £442.01 - I was a bit shocked to say the least.

My payslip has arrived today and I see that tax code says BR NONCUM, does anyone know what this means please?.

What I really want to know is will this be my tax code next month at the start of the new financial year? I went BR in July 2008.

Thanks for any help,

MOT

BR means basic rate tax i.e. that you are charged 20% of your salary without a tax allowance.

Did you have a P45 when you joined or did you fill in a P46.
Sometime companies (especially small ones) think incorrectly that BR is an emergency code to be used for new starters.

    Hi Clapton,

Thanks for this. Yes I did send a P45 in some 3 weeks ago but the girl in Payroll said they hadn't had it - it went in the internal mail!!

Also, this is the NHS we are talking about!

BR NONCUM is basic rate non cumulailitive, they will have put you on this tax code if you didnt submit a p45 from your previous employer or if you dont have one you should have completed a P46 with your new employer, I would suggest speaking to your employer they should be able to sort this for you and ask them for there tax office number give them a call and they should be able to tell you how to go about claiming the overpayment back.

usually when you complete the p46 your payroll would send off the to tax office for your tax code and when you tax code is sent back to your employer your tax would balance itself out ie you would pay less for the next month to compensate for the amount you over paid the previous months or you would receive a refund through your wage, however because it is the end of the tax year you may have to write to the tax office with a copy of your p60 to claim the tax back.

    hth and makes sense :D

it was nhs payroll i worked for!!

Thanks Bella - had to laugh when I saw that you worked for NHS payroll :rotfl::rotfl:.

The girl I spoke to is arranging for a P46 to be sent to me at my home so will get that filled in asap. I thought BR NONCUM was something to with bankruptcy and went al ghot and cold at the thought of them knowing :o.

Are the Tax Office likely to refund to me or will it go to the OR?

You can claim it back at the end of the tax year, which is fast approaching! I've got to claim about £150 back this year.

Thanks Sharon, just checking as I had a letter from the Tax Office a few months ago saying I had had a tax refund of £500 but it went straight to the OR!
