Switched supplier but received British Gas Bill!

Has this happened to anyone elese? In November, I switched from British Gas (gas) and EDF (electricity) to Scottish Power via moneysupermarket.com. As far as I knew, my account has been set up, I supplied meter readings and I've already had to supply meter readings again.

Then yesterday, I received a £250 bill from British Gas for the last 6 months - it looks like they still think I'm with them! They've also estimated my bill by over 100%.

As far as I was aware, I wouldn't have to contact my old suppliers as this would all have been taken care of my moneysupermarket. This seemed to work fine for electricity as I received my final bill from them already. It looks like I'm going to have to start arguing my case, but just wondering if this is a common thing with British Gas or not? :confused:

    im switching away from british gas myself, just had a letter off them - sorry your leaving etc etc.
    on the letter it says "we need to confirm a final meter reading with you in order to close your account, please call us on 0800 294 9354"
    ive also got a similar letter from n power for my electric.
    i think your new supplier should inform bg of opening/closing readings etc, but im going to also ring them with my final/closing readings for my final bills.

    You should have had confirmation from SP that they had taken on your gas account - have you? If not, it is possible that they are only supplying your electricity.

    BG may think you are still with them, or it may be a final bill - what dates are you being charged for? Check with SP - are they billing you for this period - if not, it definitely looks as if you are still a BG gas customer.

    I tried phoning SP but got sick of waiting in a queue. I'll try again later. I have the original confirmation letter from November saying they are now the provider of my gas and electricity. The period BG are charging me for is from when I moved in 6 months ago until 19th March and it doesn't mention anything about being a final bill.
  • Have you had a gas bill from Scottish Power yet? If not then it is possible that they haven't taken your gas supply and British Gas is still your supplier.

    If you have had a gas bill from SP then check the Meter Point Reference Number and Meter Serial Number and compare then to the details on the BG bill and the MSN to the one on your gas meter. If they are different this would indicate SP has taken the wrong site and BG is still your supplier.

    The third option is that SP has taken the correct site but hasn't sent through the transfer reading so BG hasn't closed it's account yet.

    I phoned SP and they confirmed that they have been supplying my gas since November. So they are going to send BG the work order or something again which should hopefully take care of it all! The MSNs on Scottish Power and British Gas bills match my meter...
