Hi Vicky,
I'm a plasterer in Derby, If you dont get any first hand recomendations I'd suggest contacting your local authority, here in Derby we have a local trusted trader scheme ran by the council, obtaining 3-4 quotes from a list like this should give you a good idea. Also ask for references or site visits to their previous work, any genuine plasterers will be more than happy to put you in touch with any of their previous clients. Also ask how long they have been plastering, anything over 5 years is good as there is a lot to learn in this trade and it takes a lot of practice which you can only get with time.
Just taking a few steps like this should ensure you get someone reliable, the problem with plastering is any general builder/handy man can claim to be able to do it as there are no regulations like 'Part P' for electrics or 'Corgi' for plumbers so you do have to be a little more carefull to make sure you get a good finished job.
Any further advice give me a shout, I know a few guys up here who sometimes travel down south if the job is big enough, which a whole house sounds like it would be.
