Thanks for your advice everyone.:T
I checked my credit file with Experian - nothing outstanding and nothing odd looking.
The address on the letter seems to be two addresses stuck together on closer inspection and there is no post code. I was really freaked out by this and did call them before coming on this site. I left a message but no name and used my mobile, so if they call me I'm not going to tell them anything and I will use the letter on the national debt line website.
What a horrible world we live in when people pull stunts like this, how many people end up paying someone else's debts?

UPDATE:
They phoned me back at 8:30 this morning. They named the person that they are looking for and it is not me, which is a relief. I explained that this guy was (I think) a tenant when the house was rented out 3-5 years ago before I bought it from the landlord.
They said that they would not contact me again but refused to put that in writing, so my plan is to use one of the standard letters from national debt line to get rid of them and also put in writing that I am not the person that they are looking and he doesn't live here - no I won't be signing it.
I have remembered a few more details about the guy and his landlord which won't be much help to them but perhaps if I put these in the letter as well they will leave me alone.
What do people think?

I would not bother adding anything about the previous tenant. Why make their job easier?
It has cost them money to make contact with you - let them try fishing elsewhere with out any help.I am a debt counsellor working in the voluntary sector - we don't charge our clients for the work we do!0 -
Your only concern is now over, they're not even looking for you.
As for giving them information on the previous tenant, don't. You simply have no knowledge, it is of no concern to you. If you give an indication that you know something about this other person they are more likely to keep coming back asking more questions.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j
