In a couple of days, my son will be moving into a fully furnished rental flat for six months before going back to Uni, he will share with a mate.
The landlord, in his standard letting terms will
"arrange for the porperty and contents (but not the tenant's possessions) to be insured under comprehensive insurance policies"
When he was at uni he was covered for his possessions under our household policy. Will the same apply here?
I have contacted the letting agent to confirm that only his own possessions need seperate cover.
I wonder whether bc he isnt in halls and is 200 miles from his uni will this mean taking out a completely different policy? Some of the quotes i have done on line are astoundingly high, some insist of full house contents cover.
I would imagine that the things he will take with him would total no more than £5500.
I will speak to my insurers, once i can get through, but in the meantime any help would be great.
Cheers:beer:

I used to work as an Insurance underwriter (the claims specialist). You son needs to have his own policy in the rented plat. Students at Uni are covered as it is generally accepted that they will return home in the holidays or at the end of the academic year. He would in those circumstances be covered under the section in your policy for temporay addresses.
As he is going into reneted accomodation and not at uni atthe moment, he will be seen to have left home and therefore needs his own policy. One bit of advice, do not tell the Insurer that his is at Uni when hhe's not, as this if found out (And I have seen this happen) will invalidate the whole of your policy. (The can ask for proof that he is currently enrolled at a Uni).
You can get different levels of policy from a new for old policy that covers just the insurance perils such as fire, flood, theft etc, which is cheaper. Then you can get the more comprehensive (and expensive) full accidental damage cover.
go onto confused.com or another price comparison site for the best price.
Good luck,I love giving home made gifts, which one of my children would you like?:A
