If the Dutch government can scrap this tax on travel why not our own government. Even if they cant do that shouldnt they make it fairer by basing it on the fare paid?

Do you have a link to that information?
UK APD after Nov this year is dependant on distance and class of travel.
Economy over 6000 miles, that'll be £55 IIRC0 -
Bet we are not next0

Nov 2010 £85.00 in Economy for long haul
Not exactly the whole truth. £85 is for 2010/11 (£55 2009/10) and is only for really far away places such as Australia and New Zealand. The United States, which most people would consider "long haul" is only increasing by £5 from £40 to £45 (£60 2010/11).
And there is good news for people travelling to places like Turkey, The Canary Islands, Tunisia and Morocco as the APD is falling from the current rate of £40 down to £11.0 -

I don't consider USA Long haul
LHR-LAX is 5456
Though I have to admit that I would consider Hong Kong long haul but it scrapes in by 6 miles at 59940 -
If you dont consider LHR - LAX long haul then you've clearly never done it red eye in economy.
That said i don;t consider the East cost Long Haul - Particularly not going East, im sure we once got from Orlando in something like 6 hrs.0 -

Long haul to me is 12 hrs+
OK LHR-LAX is 11:30 but you have to draw the line somewhere

an interesting thing about the UK new duty thing, is that it's calculated on the journey from London to the capital city in whatever country you're going to.
most probably it'll now be cheaper to fly to AMS before heading to Australia!
