Cant afford to go to work......

hi, i just wanted some advice regarding an issue i am having at work

basically 6 months ago i was moved from the place i work to another location which takes me an hour to drive to. I was given 2 days notice that i was being transfered and was told it would take me no more then 15mins to get there. On the first day of going to the new location i informed my manager i could not afford to travel so far but was told that i am still within the travel milage specified in my contract of employment (35miles)

I have on a weekly basis been requesting a transfer from there but keep getting fobbed off with them telling me they are looking into. I want to know if they can actually force me to move to this store even though it is causing me financial hardship when i took the job i was told i would be at my original workplace.

I am now at the point were i am in significant debt and will not be able to attend work (my employers continue to say they are looking into this matter)

is there anything i can do?

What do you drive? How much does it cost you? How far did you drive previous to the move? Can you car-share for the journey?

If your employer says you can drive it in no more than 15 mins, then it can't be more than about 15 miles away from you.

35 Miles at an average speed of 40 MPH would take 52 minutes

35 miles at an average speed of 50 MPH would take 42 Minutes

35 miles at an average speed pf 70 MPH would take 30 minutes

I may be stating the obvious here but to travel 15 miles in 15 minutes is travelling at 60 miles per hour. As you have no idea of the location and roads the OP is travelling on then you can't possibly judge that it is no more than 15 miles away.

ttp608 has asked for advice. I don't think your comment which may or not not be inaccurate is helpful or can be classed as advice.

ttp08 - I think you are just going to have to keep plugging away with your employer and see if you can get transferred to somewhere nearer. If your contract states that you can be moved or expected to work up to 35 miles away then they are probably within their rights to transfer you although I'm sure most employers would try and accommodate your needs if they can. (I don't think the length of notice you had of the move was great though).

If the employer states the journey cannot take more than 15 minutes (let's assume the employer is correct), then the absolute maximum distance, without breaking the national speed limit of 70mph for motorways and dual carriageways, must be no more than 17.5 miles. For single carriageway roads at 60mph, it's 15 miles. Simple mathematics tells you that. If the speed limit is 30 miles, then it can't be more than 8.5 miles - lower speeds reduces the distance that can be travelled in a specified time interval, not increases it.

How many miles away actually is it ? Use the AA route checker or something and type in the 2 postcodes concerned.

That is assuming there is no other traffic, no traffic lights / roundabouts, no queues to get onto / off motorway / A-road / side street. And that the journey is done out of "take the kids to school" time, i.e. before 7.30am.

As an example, I used to drive 6.5 miles door to door from home to work. It could take me between 10 minutes & 3/4 of an hour, dependent upon time (5 minutes made 15 minutes less/extra journey time), other traffic, school holidays (and there are no schools on this route). Another intermittent factor was the state of the M6 & M62 - if one or both were closed the whole town would seize up, in which case I was either stuck at work or working from home.

You are confused - the issue at debate here is the distance from the OP's home to their new place of work. This won't change no matter what the traffic conditions might be like.

I travels 20 miles to work....and no matter what time I leave, it will never take me 20 mins :) And I'm no slowpoke!

I leave over an hour for my journey.

To be fair, the time it takes to get to work is irrellevant, the OP is saying that she can't afford to go to work (I've been there, esp when the petrol prices were at their highest!)

We need to know the distance.

maninthestreet.......I understood that the highlighted phrase was the OP's issue, along with the cost.

OP, when you next log-in, answers to the questions in post #2 would be helpful.

If it states it in your contract then you don't have any choice.

I would think your best chance of being moved/transferred again is to keep your head down and work your socks off for a few months.

If you rent - perhaps you could move closer?
If you catch the bus/train which is why it takes so long - look into car sharing?

Perhaps the company could give you a mileage allowance for having to travel further since being transferred?

With the recession the way it is don't leave your job - if still unhappy find a new one before you give notice.
Not really comping any more as too ill - but hoping to win £1000+ in 2017 in cash prizes - watch this space!
