Ipod Touch - New Release?

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure where to post this but i thought this would be the best board!

basically, im looking to buy an ipod touch but was wondering if i should hold back if a new updated version is due anytime soon?

i understand that there may not be confirmation but would like to know if there was a third generation on the cards anytime soon?

Mac buyer is recommending to hold off as an update is expected soon. I don't know anything about a 3rd gen IPod touch but there is definitely a OS update coming out in the near future.

There's rumoured to be an iPhone update within the next few months, and an iPod Touch update is likely to follow a few months after that. Then again, the iPod touch has massively increased in popularity, so it's possible they could be released at the same time. Who knows?

The iPhone 3 (i.e. OS update 3) will be free to all iPhone users (including the older EDGE handsets, but I doubt it'll be free to iPod Touches (but will probably work on them, just with the phone part of the OS disabled), I suspect it'll be a small fee to upgrade...

Touch upgrade cost will be $9.95 in the USA, which is about £7 but I expect we'll be overcharged as usually at £9.95

The previous software update was (and is) £5.99.

It was well worth the price, as the next one will be be too.

so do you think the next update will be software rather than a hardware change?
and secondly, does anyone have any idea of when this 3rd gen (potentially) will come out?

Well, there's definitely a software update on the way, and there's almost definitely a new iPhone model on the way, which if history is anything to go by will mean that it's likely there will be a new iPod Touch model soon after.

It's possible the new iPhone could be released at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in June. If the new iPod Touch isn't released at the same time, it'll probably follow a few months later.

So, I'd say June to August would be a reasonable timeframe for a new iPod Touch model, but don't quote me on it. Whether you get one now or wait and see what happens is entirely up to yourself.

the reason im asking is basically because my current ipod is pretty knackered now and im looking to get a new one and also one that i can use when i go on holiday in july.

im happy to wait until june time but even in that case it may be a while until they actually make the touch available, even if its been announced..

just gotta make a decision i guess! might just go for it, not sure what they could add that would make a serious difference for me..

Rumour has it the new iPod Touch will have an FM radio receiver AND transmitter ( for car use) and have 802.11n wireless. I'm like you want one of these, but won't buy now as the 2nd Gen will drop in price once these are released June/July

It's possible, but as the article says, Apple don't always enable all the features of the hardware.

The current iPod Touch has a Broadcom Bluetooth chip in it for use with the Nike+.

Apple haven't shown any interest in using it for anything else, which is a pity, but understandable I guess.
