steamy windows!!!!

Options
9 of our double glazed units have failed. I have just had estimate (from company who fitted them just under 10 years ago, but some have been gone 18 months or more) bit confused because i thought that they took glass out, cleaned them then put new seals in. But they said no replace all glass unit. Estimate for 6 glear glass diamond leaded (small type opener ones, 1 patterned one in bathroom, 1 larger clear one in back bedroom £558 inc vat. Is there a cheaper option available?

Hi Sheila,Just my opinion but I wouldn't get the company back to give you an estimate who had fitted the original ones just under 10yrs ago. They should have lasted longer, are they under a warranty?.
Are they upvc windows or wooden?.If they are wooden they may have broken down due to being bedded on linseed oil putty which eats into the vulcanised rubber, common mistake, should be bedded on buytl putty or a glazing tape.If theyre UPVC then im sure theres a few fitters etc on here who can give you advice.I'm a joiner and make wooden windows,id expect the units to last at least 15-20yrs..

NB: also remember they all charge for a minimum of 1/3 of a square metre price, so if you have lots of small sealed units say 300mmx250mm you will be charged 1/3 rd of a metre price, can work out expensive. If you can post the dimensions will be able to give you an idea of cost .Are any below 800mm from the floor?,in a door? or within 300mm of a door? if so they would need to be toughend.

whatever you do don't get them repaired they need to be replaced. Get 3-4 quotes in replacement glass only. Plenty of companies will do it.

They would take out the glass units Sheila and replace with new glass units, you cant put new seals in them .

Replacing the whole unit is definatly the quickest, easiest and cheapest thing to do. The only time you would take the unit apart and reseal it is if it was a large, fancy, coloured, patterned, beveled, leaded expensive unit.

Alot of the labour charge depends on whether they are wooden or upvc windows as there is alot more work involved reglazing wooden windows.

The price of the unit can change alot depending on whether the glass is toughened, patterned, leaded or coated.

With the details you've given, if they are upvc windows i would say pay a maximum of £400.

I was under impression tht you got a 10year garantee with upv windows,,so if it is under 10years ,,why are they wanting to charge you:confused:

Alot of DG companies don't give the 10 year garantee on the sealed unit but it's defiantly worth checking you paperwork - if you have any.

I know it is of no use to you, but I just bought and fitted an obscured glass double glazed unit to a Tilt and Turn window in a bathroom £25.00 ( Bought from the company that supplies the window makers)
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
