Opening a joint accout

Hi all,

I am due to a get married in 3 weeks, we are expecting cheques as wedding gifts, rather than face the embarrassment of asking them to be made to one of us we want a joint account to put them in.

Problem is my credit rating isn't so good and want to avoid bringing my future wifes credit rating down. Whats the best way of doing this?

Also if we open a joint account can we open it in our married names i.e Mr & Mrs Henderson before we are married so we can get someone to deposit the cheques while we are away on our honeymoon?

Many thanks in advance

Brian

we've just had a problem like this. me and my partner will soon be moving into our first house together, at the moment we both have our own accommodation and our bank details are registered at our respective addresses.

im trying to nag him into getting his affairs in order, part of this involved setting up a small savings account linked to his current account. on the same evening after he applied for this, we then applied for the joint account (all with the same bank, online so it was easier) BUT when it came to the details of address etc, we used my address (for now as house sale hasnt gone through yet) and realised that just 10 minutes earlier he had applied for a new savings account with a different address. (we are both with the same bank for our main accounts)

we havent received the 'confirmation' emails yet, so i hope we dont get turned down based on this address thing. in 3 weeks we would be changing the addresses on all our accounts to our new address anyway.

hope they dont think we are fraudulent.

Best advice here is to open a joint savers account, with your main bank (like a halifax websaver or similar).

This avoids any credit search being done on either of you and allows you to bank the cheques.....

Best of luck with the wedding! :T

In your case, ring the bank asap or they will/may add a CIFAS marker cos this would flag as fraud with most banks - guaranteed! If you're talking about Halifax then you'll have FRAUD ALERT in bold red writing at the bottom of the screen (Halifax)...... they will add a CIFAS and then kiss goodbye to credit for the next 13mths......

    HTH :p

Very unlikely ... they would need to see proof that Mrs Henderson really is Mrs Henderson, which you won't have until you get a marriage certificate.

Probably best to open a joint account after you get back from the honeymoon. You'll then be able to pay jointly named cheques straight in.

We've already had her passport changed to her married name so we can go on our honeymoon as Mr & Mrs Henderson.

We've been given a cheque already under that name - it was just to try and get it cashed before we went or while we were away rather than leaving it 6 weeks

    Thanks,

Both of us have our main accounts with the abbey, i've had my account for a good few months now however Fay has only been with them for about 2 months. If we go for their saver account will they definately not put us on the credit reference agencies as dependants. I really don't want to tarnish her credit score for the next 2-3 years (when my defaults are removed).

In that case, ID won't be a problem, as you have the passport. Ignore what I said previously.

Savings accounts do not count at all towards credit ratings, they are not reported to the credit reference agencies. You will be 100% safe with a joint savings account.
