There's a really yummy recipe in Nigel Slater's book for braised oxtail. I don't know if the recipe is online anywhere, if not I'll write it up roughly from the book for you :)

Ahhh here we go - Braised oxtail with mustard mash - recipe about half way down the page. He cooks it in an Aga, but that would adapt perfectly for a slow cooker :)

Hi! I haven't tried them in the SC, but my OH loves them the following way: Boil oxtail in plenty of water (no salt) for around 1hr or until they are tender. Pour into a bowl keeping the water and set aside.

Brown some chopped onion in a little oil, add 2tsp curry powder, a couple of potatoes quartered, tin of tomatoes and tin of butterbeans, put the oxtail back and add some of the water as needed. Season to taste and simmer until potato cooked.

This is yum with plain boiled rice! Also really great if you leave for 24hrs in fridge for flavour to develop.

Otherwise, you might find something here:http://southernfood.about.com/library/crock/bltopcp.htm

Good luck and enjoy however you do it! :)

oxtail is delicous and economical cut much underrated, delia does a good recipe, it would be just the right kind of thing to do in a sc.

Jamie Oliver put a good recipe for Oxtail Gnocchi in his article in the Sunday Telegraph at the weekend, which is available online here:
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/fashion/main.jhtml?xml=/fashion/2006/02/26/stjamie26.xml

(sorry I haven't worked out short links yet)

It's also a genuinely interesting article about the quality of food we buy, and the value we place on what we eat, which seems pertinent to me given the discussion in the thread on black saturn's meal planner (all hail the mighty fruit cobbler, BTW).

Love the look of those recipes, do you think you could cook the brisket from the cottage pie recipe in the sc, and is so how would you do it?

However with any oxtail recipe, cool it and stick it in the fridge overnight to lift the fat off otherwise you'll be swimming in it

Is it me or is anyone else getting "page can't be found" when clicking on the recipe links in the Jamie Oliver article that heroicnich posted?

Thanks for posting this, it's a great article, and this quote in particular is all too true unfortunately ... "kids today are the first generation ever expected to live shorter lives than their parents. All because of bad diet and lifestyle".

BTW, I found when I scrolled further down that all the recipes are at the bottom of the page ;):o
