Depending on your total income, you might get some help with your rent. I'd discuss this with your Lone Parent Adviser or the university Student Services who will have all the figures.0

I really struggle wit the bursary to the point im probably going to have to drop out - however i began the course in debt and then split with my partner so my living costs went up.
You should be entitled to a bit of help for having dependants and you wouldget more bursary if you are over 26 than people under 26 even on the non means tested side. Have a chat with the finance people at your uni.
And good luck with your course x0 -
My lass got £6k per year bursary, a very tidy sum. No dependants, not a mature student, no disabilities, living away from parental home.
It's a good amount, but to her credit, she worked full time throught the holidays and did a minimum of 20 hours every weekend.0 -
Hi There, I did my training four years ago finishing dec 2007, I recieved £5,600.00 a year as an independent student with no extra bursary addons. I am aware that if you have dependents you get extra on top, (which worked out as quite a lot for s number of my friends).
Another good thing to apply for (if you have the time to wade through the probing paper work) is the hardship fund (awful name right?!) it basically takes into account how much you have coming in and gives you a lump sum every few terms. Its not a huge amount but it goes a long way towards books and other nursing essentials...tights, shoes etc etc.
Make sure you apply for your tax back on things like nursing registration fees, shoes, tights, laundry, uniform costs, again its not a lot but it adds up and every little helps!
You can also apply to your LEA for the book grant (not sure of the official name for it check it on google) but they can give you a lump sum to assist with book costs each year.
Check out good student accounts, find the ones that turn into graduate accounts when you finish and remain interest free overdrafts!
most uni's are really helpful even if you havent yet started so get intouch with your student one stop shop and they should be able to point you in the direction of help! It takes time for finances to settle esp with NHS burs but def worth it in the long run.
Sorry for the rant but 100% understand how you must be feeling. Good luck with the course it's such a fab job.

In response to one of the posts here, you no longer get extra financial assistance if you are over 26. This ended in the academic year 2007-08.
If you are studying for the diploma, the bursary is non-means tested. If you would like to study for the degree, then apply for the diploma and switch in your final year. This way you will receive the bursary for the first two years, rather than having to survive on the student loans and grants.
You should receive quite a lot of extra support due to having children, I have friends on my course who are in receipt of extra money to cover childcare etc. That said, I find it a real struggle. My bursary just about covers my rent and travel (remember to factor in travel to and from placements when budgeting.) Luckily I'm doing the two year fast-track post-graduate course, I don't think I could stretch to 70+ hour weeks for three years.0 -
Hi. Don't know if this will be of any help. But could you up your income by working while the kids are at school? If you do bank shifts at the hospital your training at it would give you valuable experience as well as extra funds. Doing bank shifts means you tell them the hours you are available. So maybe clinic shifts would work best.0

As one of the other posters said, you should go to see one of the advisors at the student finance office or at your student union. In my experience, they're excellent. They will give you all the figures for bursaries, dependant's awards etc, and they will also work out your housing benefit allowances.
As far as I know your bursary doesn't count as income for tax credit purposes either. And don't forget - you're exempt from paying council tax as a full time student.
Good luck!0
