Moving into new property - how to find out phone number?

Hello,

I am asking on behalf of my mother who is moving next week into a newly built bungalow, we want to set-up sky (tv, phone and broadband) for her and doing it online they ask for her phone number...there is a phone line at the property...how do we find out the phone number? Or do we need to contact BT to set it up (although she does want to have landline with Sky)?

Many Thanks :)

she needs to get the land line connected, and she will be issued with a new tel number - gone are the days, when you took over the existing houses phone number, i think that ceased in the 70s lol

Give Sky a ring, they do installations now, and their line rental is just £10 a month, you may be lucky, they are begging for customers, haggel, haggle, haggle. You will get great deals at the moment if you are wanting the full monty. Let us know how you get on
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

That appears highly unlikely. Do you mean there are sockets (installed by the builder)?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Plug a phone in - if their is a dialtone dial 17070 if the line is active it will tell you the phone number
Normally in a new build BT Openreach (the division who are in charge of installing lines) usually bring the line to outside the front door then it is upto the builder/occupier to get it connected to the internal wiring (I think this is to stop companies like Virgin Media complaining about BT competition if they put new lines straight into new homes)

Ask the builder or agent if possible if the line is connected to the internal wiring

As you are the first occupier I don't think the line will be active - and you will need to pay the install charge - you might be able to get it for £29.35 if you order before the 31st - see: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=20069675&postcount=1244

edit: also I think if you need to put a line in for sky equipment (they ask for the box to be connected to a line) they refund the installation fee

Sky can arrange for the connection of a new line without the need for you to contact BT.

"If you do not have a BT compatible phone line (e.g. if you have a cable phone line), we can arrange for installation of a new phone line providing extensive new engineering work over and above standard needs is not required. We will confirm the charge (if any) for your new phone line installation at the time of booking.

If we do arrange a new phone line installation for you, we will confirm the installation date to you in writing. If you want to re-arrange the date, you must give us at least 3 working days' notice. If you cancel the installation on less than 3 working days' notice, or you are not at your Address to give the engineer access to your property or, if you fail to make the necessary arrangements for the installation to take place, we will charge you a fee to compensate us for the reasonable costs we incur as a result. Details of the arrangements you need to make for an engineer visit and of the fee are available on the Sky Talk website (https://www.sky.com/skytalk) or by calling Sky Customer Services on 08442 410 400."
