San Diego and LA Beaches

Is there much to do in San Diego?
I have three days to spend in the LA/ San Diego area, and was wondering whether to base myself in San Diego, or at a beach resort in LA.
The only thing I really want to do in San Diego is the zoo, but there are trips from the LA area. If I stay at the beach I will just chill out, don't need to be kept busy!
I have stayed in Beverly Hills before, and whilst I really enjoyed it, I need to stay away from the shops this time!
I am flying back from LAX, but can fly into SAN or LAX (from SFO). Also, I don't drive, so need to stay in one of the busier resorts (although I am fine with using public transport).
Thanks chaps! x

Id say San Diego is only worth going to for the Zoo. But then again LA is only worth going to for Universal/Disney and Santa Monica.
SD is cheaper hotel wise that Santa Monica but in Santa Monica you are easily based for a great beach and market, Universal, Disney and even creaming yourself over Hollywood which is not even worth a visit.
If it were me id choose Santa Monica, or if its out of your budget try somewhere like El Segundo (a suburb of LAX - but decent enough area)
Just seen you don't drive, El Segundo is connected by the metro and buses, but Santa Monica - well transport is not needed.0 -
Here you go, some useful info here:

I searched but didn't get past the (rather novel) hotels argument!
Am off to the pub shortly ... you enjoy your well deserved wine

I dont know what transport is available from LA but I had great fun at Newport Beach to the south, loads of sand and big waves, it was 1979 so I dont know how much has changed in the passing years.0

If you go to San Diego be sure to visit Point Loma it is on the bus network and has great views and a small national park.0

We didn't really do the beaches though as wasn't warm enough when we went.0
