Faulty boiler & Homecare 200

Hello,

I have an 18 year old combi-boiler that doesn't seem to be up to the job of heating all the necessary apllliances if they are all used at the same time. For instance, if the washing machine is on then the heating doesn't work, if the washing machine is on then the shower wont work, etc etc. The engineer even had to reduce the pressure of water coming into the house because of various problems.

I think I need a new, more powerful combi-boiler. I'm on the British Gas Homecare 200 plan and was just wondering if it covers a new combi-boiler? (I can't find my agreement, and I reckon the answer will be no, but just want to make sure first)

Thanks

No it doesn't. It just covers repairs and labour.

And I suggest that you get more than one quote for a replacement, also I would ask a
local private engineer to look at the boiler, if it was powerful enough before why not now? I believe b gas engineers are on commission . regards bri

Thanks for the replies. Just phoned BG and the earliest they can get someone out to see what options are available for a new boiler is the 1st April. In the meantime I'll get a local plumber to have a look and give me a quote.

    Thanks

do the heating and shower both work (at the same time) if the washing machine is off?

If so, you might want to look at a cold fill washing machine - may be cheaper than a new boiler. Although If the boiler is that old and working below spec, it may be on the way out anyway.

Be prepared to be blown away with the quote from BG, no matter how much of a silver tongued salesman he is the figures will make you want to sit down.

Try to get a couple of quotes off local plumbers, ask to see their corgi registration to see if their corgi covers the installation of boilers, make sure they have adequate insurance and agree to a fixed price.

The boiler wont be cheap , I'm guessing your most competitive will be off a good quality local engineer.
Then cancel your home care plan that covers your boiler, your new boiler will have a manufacturer's guarantee.

I have not heard any one say they got a good deal off BG.

    good luck..

Good evening: Starting 1 April 2009 (i.e next Wednesday) , gas installers in Great Britain will need to be registered with the Gas Safe Register...also information about the changes on the CORGI website (though you have to dig deep to find it:rolleyes:).

And BG's quote will be significantly higher than most independent RGIs:eek: Let us know how you get on.

When you say "if the washing machine is on then the heating doesn't work, if the washing machine is on then the shower wont work, etc etc." do you mean not work at all, or not enough hot water?

Most washing machines these days are cold fill.

I am no plumber, but it sounds more like a water supply/ problem than a boiler problem; and the engineer reducing the water pressure indicates that may be the case.

Yes, not enough hot water basically which to me means that the combi-boiler isn't doing it's job properly.
