You would think there would be a postal redirection process in place, put there by the Derbyshire to redirect sensitive and confidential documents sent to the Birmingham branch not knowing its closed etc, by its members surely?
As it happens, my Derbyshire account was opened at the Birmingham branch,
which is probably why I got a letter from them last April informing me that the branch would be closing down as of 27 June 2008.

A redirection could have been in place and expired since then.

To trap the unwary a Google search on "derbyshire building society" birmingham returns as its first hit the address and a map of the location of the non-existent branch as the first hit. The information is supposedly from https://www.thederbyshire.co.uk

Not that it helps but but my grey R.A.M. is starting to kick in. The Birmingham shop used to be called the mortgage shop or something similar. There were signs saying that it was part of D.B.S. and when I first saw it I naively thought that it was only for obtaining mortgages but after enquiring, I was told that I could open savings a/c.s. This was handy for me as I could get my passbooks updated rather than sending them away.
    Good luck.
  • I don't think anyone has mentioned that, if it turns out that your item WAS delivered by Royal Mail to the closed branch without obtaining a signature (which seems unlikely to me in this case) then you should make a claim to the Royal Mail under their service guarantee.

Setting aside the redirect issue, I still find it odd that Royal Mail have been unable to tell you with any certainty what has happened to the postal item (if there was no redirect in place, as another poster suggested the item should be being returned to you, and that should be showing up as such on the online tracking system).
  • Is it possible that the nearest Nationwide branch could shed any light on what has happened to the post of the closed Derbyshire branch?

I know when NW took over the Portman, closed branches had a notice re-directing people to the local NW branch - presumably they accepted the post as well.

Or are the Derbyshire still being run as a completely separate business to NW?
  • Sorry if I sound unsympathetic, but I found The Derbyshire website in less than a minute; found a list of branches on that site within another 30 seconds (which would have shown Birmingham branch no longer exists), and found a contact telephone number for advice on what to do to close my account within another 15 seconds.

    It wasn't exactly rocket science.

Apparently quote from Coventry Branch " The letter box is boarded up, it can accept no post, there is a mail divert in place"

If so why is my letter still not be recieved and signed for?

Royal mail have confirmed there is no Mail Redirection set up? The only chance anyone has is:

Is there a DBS business diversion in place?

Is the letter box NOT boarded up afterall and Hilda and Frank who are the tea boys and girls from the DBS picks up all the confidential mail from the closed branch inbetween other odd jobs they carry out on there days out from the local old peoples home?

Sorry, I still don't understand why you chose to do this instead of contacting the Derbyshire for advice. I have an account with them, but because I'm a long way from any branches, my account is handled by their Head Office in Derby. It seems likely to me that they would have advised you to send all your details there.

By the way, have you actually contacted their Head Office yet, to see if they can offer advice? Their number is 08456 004 005.

Mate, life is all about choices, what you do not understand may be as clear as day to others, so do not beat yourself up about not understanding why i chose my path in this whole sage. It may come to you, if not do not worry to much, we all cannot work stuff out all the time?

Apparently today the latest update is, they put a redirection of mail facility in place for a period of three months, but due to the oncost, they decided it was too costly, so decided to let members mail go walkabouts should they be unaware of the branch closure and send mail to the Birmingham branch unaware of closure like myself?

Royal mail have confirmed no mail redirection exists if it ever has?
