Dell Inspiron Screen Flicker

Had a Dell Inspiron 9300 from new for some time, and in recent weeks I thought the screen was on it's way out because of flickering. However, I discovered that the screen only flickers when the power cable is attached, and the icon in the bottom right corner keeps switching from the battery to the power icon, but the screen doesn't flicker when on battery. One day I nearly went out to buy a new computer because when I started my Laptop, with the power cable connected, the Laptop would not start ..... but when I took the cable out, and relied on batteries, it started!!!
I've tried 'Googling' and have discovered other users having the same issues but haven't yet found a solution. As for contacting Dell, well the first thing they want is for me to take out a new guarantee, but being an MSE'er that goes against the grain:rolleyes: .
Any ideas?????

It has taken about 4,500,000,000 (4.5 billion) years for the Earth to form as it is now .........
and it'll only take about another 100 years for mankind to really **** it up!!!!

Not convinced it's the power-pack!!;)It has taken about 4,500,000,000 (4.5 billion) years for the Earth to form as it is now .........

2 things it might be...
1) The power pack might not be the correct Wattage / Amps rating to run the laptop (i've known some laptops that need 60w work fine on a 90w supply but fail to start when used with a 120w power supply!)
2) The adapter socket on the laptop is starting to wear out. So it needs the exact size of plug or the contact is intermittent or does not contact.
1) Can be easy (get a new or second hand power supply from eBay)
2) Can be fixed by any experienced person with a solder Iron and knows his way around a laptop's electronics. Dell's have good Technical service manuals hidden in their site. Use them to order replacement parts. or pony up to £100+ odd for the Dell service
