Credit search to change from HSBC single to joint account?

My OH and myself are looking to open a joint account. We applied to First Direct however were refused. This presumably is due to him being in the country only 3 months, and me having a black mark on my credit file from the Alliance & Leicester who I am currently taking to the Ombudsman (they have admitted the problem was their end and it was poor service that caused my to end up with an account 6 months in arrears when I kept telling them I had the money to pay it off!). I am very wary about just applying for another account as we will be refused again. We don't need any credit, just a place to put our wages etc! He is currently with Lloyds TSB and I am with HSBC, and we want to just have one account due to Lloyds not being part of the faster payments scheme, so moving money about is a nightmare.
What I am asking for advice on is can anyone see anyway forward after being refused for an account? Will HSBC run another credit check on me to open a joint account? Is their any point of calling First Direct to explain the horrible Alliance & Leicester mess? Also how can I remove my financially messy ex from my credit file? We do not have any finance in common anymore. It just seems so annoying that we have over £4000 in savings, rising over £1000 a month, and can't even get a current account.
