NPower have sent me a cheque, but what for?

I received a cheque this morning from Npower for £29.80

It says "As promised here is a cheque for £29.80"

We recently decided to swap from NP to British Gas, we have received confirmation from British Gas to welcome us back with them. What's going on? Do I cash the cheque, I'm worried that it is some kind of trick, like, if we cash it we are obliged to return to NP

Does anyone have the answer, has anyone else received a similar cheque?

Were you in credit with your account - have you checked online statement for final bill?

No, we have a prepayment meter.

You account could still have been in credit e.g. because they failed to reduce the unit charges correctly/ontime.

You should receive a statement detailing what the cheque was for - that may arrive in the next day or so.

Or you could call them to find out.

Or you could just bank the cheque and enjoy getting your energy from your new supplier :)

    Thanks premier.

So you think there is no risk cashing the cheque? They cannot force us to stay with them if we do, can they? I don't want to phone them and be bombarded with questions as to why we are changing suppliers.

As long as you don't currently owe them money they can't stop you from switching supplier.

Even if the cheque was sent in error and they decide to try & recover it, it itself won't be a debt to prevent the switch going ahead beacuse:
    (a) I'm not sure it's big enough
    (b) a debt is not a debt until 28 days after it has been formally demanded

Sorry I can't guarantee they wont contact you to try and keep you as a customer - just tell them to bog off if they do!
