You get a statement every month by the sounds of it.

it's not quite monthly though, I think it depends how many transactions have gone through. In january I got a statement covering 22 december - 15th Jan
in february the statement covered 16 jan -`10 feb and another one covered 10 feb (more transactions) - 26 feb...so not quite a month and never more than a page at a time

I get a 1 page statement every 3/4 weeks and I only have a basic account...or is that just with the HSBC basic account that you only get quarterly statements?

Only HSBC basics. Other banks, obviously, have different policies.

Scousebird is entirely correct that they could not give a flying one if you close your basic account. They only really offer them because the government told them they should do so. (And before anyone jumps on me, every other bank - possibly bar the Co-Op - is precisely the same.)

Exactly so. If you close your account they will probably be glad to see the back of you. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if bank staff were paid commission for every basic bank account that they close lol!

Hardly any banks offered basic accounts until about ten years ago when the government came out with a pledge for universal banking, i.e. that everyone should be able to have a bank account, no matter what their circumstances. The banks have complied with the government's request/instruction to offer basic accounts, but they have never liked doing so. Why do you think they are usually more difficult to open than ordinary current accounts, e.g. can only be opened by post, not in branch? To discourage you from opening one of course.
