Freecycle is DEAD! (well, almost..)

I completely agree with that. I'm sick of seeing people post laptop requests to the Manchester groups I'm in and watching the sob stories get less believable every minute...
I have really lost my patience with Freecycle on this!
I am so fed up of seeing WANTED posts on my local board that are asking for laptops, three piece suites, TVs, Blu Ray players! WHAT THE HELL?
I also hate it when people specify what they are looking for. Like people will post; WANTED: sofa (City Centre). Then in their message they say things like 'I am looking for a navy blue, leather three seater sofa, preferrably with reclinable seats'. WHAT?!?!
I think the original aim of Freecycle, to exchange items that would otherwise have gone to landfill, has been lost with people just looking for freebies on expensive items.
I tend to use the 'giveaway' page on my local paper's website as much as Freecycle nowadays! I am just fed up of the grabbit attitude of many people, and the persistant no-shows!
(Really sorry about that rant).'I can't deny the British influence on my accent and mannerisms, but I don't know the British national anthem, I didn't weep for Princess Diana and I always cheer when Britain loses at sport. That's how British I am' Constantine-Simms. :T

I agree peole asking for Sat Navs ,Laptops, Flat screen TV's, not to mention must be less than 6 months old?
Surely no one gives these people anything!
On the good side i hoped to find a chicken run ,hen house or similar and a kind person in weedon gave me one so i am really pleased as my rescue chickens are coming Sunday!
Thankyou L0 -
Well our group is huge and very busy. Offers get posted within minutes and it has worked out very well for me. I posted an offer at the weekend for a television and it was collected within half an hour. I posted a wanted for a breadmaker and received an email almost straight away. Brilliant. I dont even read any of the messages on there, I go and post my message and wait for the emails.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

My freecycle group (Salford) ceased to exist on the yahoo boards and i tried to post to the manchester group only to get a snotty moderator saying i should have posted to the Salford group first. After pointing out it didnt exist any more, they pointed me to: http://www.freecycle.org/
Looks like it moved and only some of the freecycle groups are still on yahoo. I cancelled my membership to the manchester group though since it had taken them 3 days to get to my message, and we needed to shift my item quickly. It went on the Salford one in a day.
The new website seems to work so much better as you can join several groups and manage your postings easily (and in the format they require, so less snotty emails from the mods) and it doesnt seem to use yahoo (hence me not finding the Salford group there).
But you still get the WANTED postings which gets annoying when people are constantly asking for laptops. I'd like a filter that prevents these appearing in my digest email. But there you go, cant have everything.0 -
One of my local freecycle groups wouldn't put my 'offered' posts on because I didn't put the postcode, as well as the town, but hardly any of the other posts had put it on and some didn't even put the town.0

My moderators are great and I have posted 3 things which appeared within the hour and 1 item was collected within the day and other 2 should be collected today - very pleased.0

I am a moderator on my local freecycle (we have 5 mods) and even though I go onto my pc numerous times a day checking for posts, the others all have full time jobs so only go on evening/weekends etc. Please remember that the mods give up their own time to do this for no recompense. I have issues with excessive wants and will reject them if I see them but the owner of the group is happy for people to ask for whatever they want.
It does depend on the group as each has their own owner with their own rules, some are stricter than others.
Please don't tarnish all freecycle groups with the same brush, us mods work hard to get all the posts through mostly without any thanks and sometimes a lot of hassle.0 -
My freecyle is brilliant, if I post want/offer, it goes through in 2/3 mins. I was able to get rid of alot of stuff, posted friday 3.30pm and all the stuff gone by 8.30pm. Am I allowed to mention my local?0

I am very happy with the (several) freecycle groups that I am a member of.
I choose not to receive emails (though actually you could do junk rules to weed out the ridiculous "desperately wanted" ads), and so only see things when I go to the group's web site.0
