Ipod Query

Apple sent a replacement ipod for one still in warranty.It had stopped working,would'nt charge and nothing registered when connected to laptop.
Only the actual ipod was sent,we tried it and nothing happened at all when it was connected so we assume it may be the dock that is the problem.
I have no idea about these things so any advice would be appreciated.
Also I was wondering if the dock would be covered by the same warranty as the actual ipod that it came with,if so can I request a new one.I can't find any information on this on the Apple warranty page.
I had explained the problem in full to Apple and had assumed the ipod would have come complete with a new dock.

My Ipod never came with a docking station just a white Ipod cable. Have you tried conecting the Ipod directly with the cable?
If this works then as you say its the docking station thats at fault in which case your old Ipod may be good.
Did you return the original Ipod?
Could you borrow a cable from a friend to test your Ipod?

The dock is unlikely to be faulty, it's just a through connector, and designed so the ipod stands up during charging. However to rule it out, charge from the standard cable first to see if it makes a difference.

iPods do not come with docks, they are an optional extra as mentioned by bobby-boy above.
