Travel Insurance

Just read your information on Travel Insurance and your reference to the EHIC Card. The EHIC website states that this is not an alternative to Travel Insurance, etc. etc. It does not mention the EHIC+ which implies that one would be covered for other losses and repatriation. Perhaps Martin could elaborate on that for us.
Thank you. Fantastic website.

An EHIC card gives you "Emergency Treatment" in member countries, the level of cover you receive varies from country to country but as a rough guide its normally A&E treatment, if they then put you in a normal ward you can often be charged for this.

An EHIC card does not cover repatriation or other losses eg baggage etc etc

To be safe it is best to take a decent Travel Insurance Policy.

I just wanted to add a few words. In some EU countries were most hospitals are private (unlike the UK were all NHS hospitals are public) this is a major limitation.

Just wanted to add that often travel insurance policies expect you to have the card.
So if you just needed say basic stitches at A&E, they would expect you to get that on the NHS equivalent, so you MAY find that your travel insurance stipulates it.

Best thing to do is to get the card and travel insurance as well.
