DS got a hole in his tooth!

I noticed it a couple of days ago, and we were due to go to the dentist today anyway. The dentist more or less told me off, said 'please please brush his teeth with him and from now on he must use an adult toothbrush and adult toothpaste.' He repeated this several times. It was just his attitude. He sounded like he was telling DS off when he spoke to him. He was Polish (I think) and DS couldn't understand what he was saying because his accent was very strong.
DS is 6 - I felt bad enough! We always brush his teeth every day, and I thought I was doing the best by getting a toothbrush appropriate for his age, and the milk teeth toothpaste. I now feel dreadful. It's one of his back teeth which the dentist said were his adult teeth. Sorry to rant just quite upset about it!

What's the big deal if he was Polish or not? His nationality is completely irrelevant - all you had to do was mention that your son had difficulty understanding him.
So many people feel the need to mention someone's race...I cannot understand why. From Poland...with love.
They are (they're) sitting on the floor.
Their books are lying on the floor.
The books are sitting just there on the floor.0 -
i can understand exactly where you are coming from. my ds went to the dentist about a year ago and the dentist was particularly rude to him and to myself. he also had a hole in his tooth and started giving us a big lecture about dental hygiene and how i should be brushing his teeth etc, if he was incapable of doing them properly himself. although i agreed, to a certain extent with him, he was very rude and abrupt and made me feel very humiliated at the way he spoke to me.
i just took it on the chin. he was maybe just having a bad day and im sure he didnt mean to offend or upset me. im sure this is also the case with your dentist.0 -
yep same here, new local dentist made me and my children feel terrible, never had probs at dentist before and my children have always been told their teeth are good, now new dentist says not and that they're not brushing properly etc, very abruptly. Perhaps its a sign of the times.0

although i understand the upset at how the dentist was with your children he is really teaching a valuable lesson.
Your children will thank that dentist in years to come when they have beautiful teeth with no fillings etc.
Can you imagine how much more upsetting it will be for your child to go through the trauma of having teeth pulled out?
swallow your pride and indignation at being 'told off' and be glad he has told you before it's too late.
I'm sure the dentist probably gets very exasperated at the amount of children he sees with bad teeth being traumatised about going to the dentist because of having fillings etc at a young age.
sorry if this seems harsh but it is a subject very close to my heart!!I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0 -
Dentists must get sick of people not looking after there teeth and prob see this all the time that is may be why he was a bit abrupt. He doesn't want them to get any worse. My friend's ds who is 4 has just had 5 teeth out  All from the back they were getting really rotten and she didn't know until they became infected. Poor lad.:)Mummy to 2 wonderful boysWant to be fit for 30 not fat at 30but i want never gets!!!0

If you want a dentist with time to tell you nicely exactly why things are going wrong, exactly how you can help, and to give you support throughout, then you'll need to pay privately.
If you consider yourself 'lucky' to be seen on the NHS, then someone, often a foreign import, has to get the point across in about 20 seconds max.
Your dentists have obviously managed to get the point across to you, and you now realise that a hole in your offspring's tooth IS your fault.
Job well done given the funding constrictions I'd
say.How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -

I don't recall saying that his being Polish was a big deal. I was stating that his strong accent was difficult to understand. As far as I can see you are the one making the fuss.Sealed Pot Challenge #817 £50 banked0 -

You're the one that chose to bring his race into this. You could have simply stated that he had a strong accent - but no, you had to bring up the fact that he was Polish into it.From Poland...with love.

I stated that I 'think' he was Polish. If he was from Newcastle, Scotland, Thailand or wherever I would have stated that too, to give the idea of the accent.
Incidentally, it's interesting that you state your race in your username. I would have thought that was irrelevant too.Sealed Pot Challenge #817 £50 banked0
