400 or 800 DPI mouse?

I need to buy a new mouse and I see some are spec'ed at 400 and some 800 DPI. What are the advantages of the 800? They seem to cost more.

Thinking of getting a wired optical mouse for my home PC. Any recommendations?

All advice/comments appreciated.

  • 800 dpi has twice the resolution of the 400 dpi. This means that you only have to move the mouse 1/2 as far to get the same movement on screen.

What does this mean? Probably not a lot if you don't play games, but it could be more sensitive (i.e. better) on non-standard surfaces such as slightly reflective desks.

If there's not much in the price, go for the 800dpi

    ? Surely that'd render a 2000dpi mouse unusable.

Does it not mean the mouse performs better when moving at high speed? It can read more detail of the surface it's running on, so is more accurate, especially during quick movements (such as in gaming).

A reasonable mouse should have around 800dpi these days. Gamers tend to go for nearer 1600dpi.

  • Perhaps, that's where the mouse control software in the windows control panel comes in. Might be that Wikipedia makes it clearer or not?

Either way more dpi the better

    As I understand it:-

The more DPI the more it can pick up on ever so slight movements. Its more accurate and as some1 else has said it is a essential for gamers as it can give you a better chance of tuning your aim.
  • Higher DPI is better for games (as said) but also better for photo editing where you need to work with slight movements.
