Council Housing?

Well, just a general question really, im 26 and have a bf of 45, he moved up here to be with me, we have been together 4 years, we are living with my family at present and now they want us out, they need more room.
We cant really afford anywhere, he doesnt make that much and im even less being self employed, whats the deal with council housing? i know theres a long waiting list but what do you have to be to be accepted for one? or is there any other cheaper ways of getting a house to rent with going private which would take all our money and then some!?
We have no kids yet. no saving. and debts.

Council housing lists are longer than a gorilla's arm - and growing by the day. You probably don't stand much chance of getting anything for 10-20-30 years - but it depends where you are. Cities have more than rural areas.
  • blooming heck! maybe thats out then, just hoping that maybe this regenda is more better and not long, i see a lot about them around.
    thanks for replying!

If you're prepared to live in any area and in a flat you're MUCH more likely to get offered somewhere. Council staff can also put you on HA lists.
Go get on the list. It's free and you never know!

Where I used to live, the waiting list for a single person was 20-30 years even 20 years ago.
  • well we are in the north west and not in a big city, but have no other choice than find other housing as my family just dont have the room anymore for us. the rent on everything is just so high unless you are looking for a little box with no windows even then its not cheap!

If you've been together 4 years at your parents and not saved a penny then you seriously need to address your incomings/outgoings too. it's going to cost you a lot of money renting even a council place.
  • he hasnt been living with me for those years he was living down south. having debts means that saving hasnt been easy so when they're gone we will do that, but this is whats going on now, cant do nothing about the timing,

Find out about benefits & LHA you might be entitled to.

Check craigslist and gumtree for rentals in your area - you'll have to work out how you'll pay bills if you're on a tight budget.
Or look in the Lady magazine and see whether there's any part time jobs with accomodation in your area :)
  • thanks so much! i will look at all those! i work 24/7 as it is, so dont think i can do anymore but i will look at those things! thanks! x
