Up and down garden wall light question

I have been looking for a pair of garden wall lights to sit on the back of the property and light up the back garden at night. I have an 80W security spotlight which gives about the right sort of brightness. This is a power hungry beast and pretty ugly.
I have seen up and down garden wall lights fitted with gu10 bulbs (i would be looking to replace these with low energy equivalents), but in the shops they are just hanging on the wall and give no indication of if they would light up the garden or just the property.
This was the style i have seen

Anybody use these sort of lights and would they give enough light for what i am after, or should i be looking at the more conventional lantern types?

We've used them. They look lovely against the wall and will provide an ambient light in the area but they certainly aren't going to light your whole garden. We had several running the length of the wall and it looked lovely and lit the patio - not much else.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

If you have an 80w light at present then it can hardly be said to be power hungry. If you use the type shown in your link, they use 2x35w bulbs, a total of 70w, which is not a lot less than your existing light. As Doozergirl says, they are quite attractive, but will not provide much in the way of area illumination. Personally, I've never understood the fascination for garden lighting.
As far as I am concerned, if it is dark, then the blinds are drawn and seeing the garden is not then a priority. But hey! Each to their own preference.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
Maybe there not so suitable, i was looking for an ambient light and it will mostly be lighting the patio. They will use less consumption as i will be replacing the bulbs with low energy led ones (thats why these seemed good in that respect as they use gu10's).
I am lighting the garden because the living room is at the back of the property and hopefully when the garden is finished it might look good and i can sit and enjoy the view.
Thats the problem i am having because i want to use low energy ones i am a bit stuck for choice, also the gu10's also do a coloured led range which i thought might make it look a bit different.0 -
If you want to add light around the garden, i'd buy some solar powered garden lights that you just stick in the ground. They cost nothing to run!
Personally I am like the earlier poster, the only time I want light in the garden at night is if I want to go out there for some reason so a security light is the best option for me.0 -
To be low energy and bright enough to light the garden you need a fluorescent fitting.
I doubt LEDs will be bright enough especially in the up-down fitting.
These are not the most attractive but will perform well.

Otherwise a standard lantern or bulkhead fitting that is large enough to take a 20W or 25W compact fluorescent lamp.0
