Economy 7 hours

I have just noticed that the mechanical clock on my elec meter is wrong. This means that my low units start and finish at the wrong times, ending at approx 3pm. In this case it works in my favour but is it legal to have my low units when I want them and not when my company wants them ie. 12am to 7am?

    Welcome to the forum.

This happens frequently. It is something that meter readers are supposed to check I believe; but rarely(never?) do.

It would certainly be legal had you not noticed this, and why would you?

I suppose that technically you are committing some sort of offence(deception??) if you were aware of the fault. However as long as you hadn't tampered with the meter it would be impossible for any action to be taken.

In any case I believe meters have to be changed every 20 years!!!
  • Do you think I am allowed to keep it as it is?

If they discover the fault they should fix it; if you tell them about it they should fix it. Given the apathy that exists, they probably won't fix it!!!!

My meter low rate runs from 10.30 to 7.30 (ie nine hours instead of seven). Apparently different areas use different times. If I were you I wouldn't worry about it, it just means you don't have to have everything running at night.

Scottish power changed my meter last year for a white digital one, my off peak times are now 3am - 7am and 1.30pm - 4.30pm (GMT). Maybe you have 2 off peak times?
If you have a separate mechanical timer it might be best to let them know.
