quick passport question

Hi
I'm going to Cyprus for one week in August 09 and my passport expires Jan 2010.

Am I right in thinking I'll need to get a new one before going to Cyprus as i've heard you have to have 6 months remaining on your passport to travel?

Cheers x

    No.

Only a few countries (like China) impose the six-month rule.

However, passport prices generally rise in the Autumn, so if you plan any more foreign holidays it might be smart to renew your passport now. Any unused time (up to nine months) on the old one will be added on to the validity of your new passport.

I am sure that Cyprus has a UK embassy with a website, so please check there rather than taking my advice.

If memory serves me well I think you need 3 months left from the first day of your trip left on your passport. I also seem to remember that not mattering if your an EU citizen though. Sorry I can't say for definite

Passport valid for at least three months beyond the period of intended stay required by all except:
    (a) 1. nationals of EU countries...

    So Voyagers information appears correct.

The advice on TLCS is as follows...
    https://www.tlcsvisas.com/tlcs/
Please note that U.K. nationals do NOT need a Tourist Visa to enter Cyprus for a period of up to 90 days. All other nationals must check via the LINK above to find out whether they can travel Visa Free or whether they need to apply for a Visa.

You can renew your passport up to 9 months before expiry and the Passport Office will 'credit' you with the unused months.
So you can get a passport valid for up to 10 years and 9 months.

As Voyager says, some countries do impose a 6 month rule, but these are mainly long-haul destinations.

Some airlines impose their own regulations about passports, I think this is because they are responsible for returning passengers who have been refused entry to a country because of passport/visa problems.

The six months rule applies to Turkey, you pay £10 for a six months visa on entry, I have just applied to renew mine (I didn't want to be put on a plane back home ;-)

I don't know if it applies to Northern Cyprus if that is where you are going.
