You need an inkjet printer for good photos. Get one with individual cartridges for each colour so you can change the empty one only.
Kodak advertises that their ink prices are cheapest so check the Kodak printers.
Consider buying a cheap b&w laser printer if you print a lot of text pages and save the expensive per page inkjet for photos.
  • Inkjet for colour photos is the cheapest option. Look at how much money you have to spend and the dpi level for quality. If you are not interested in quality but quantity, you will need to see the ppm value. Also check out how much memory the printer has, as this can effect the performance of output.
Colour lasers are too expensive currently, and are really for large office type environments. Cheap B/W lasers are better for just text printing.

I always go for Epsons myself cheap for inks. I agree go for one with separate inks and have about 5-6 inks including black.

I seem to recall Canon last year had a good rating for being cheap on Gadget show just before Xmas, Epson I think came 2nd

Lexmark are also very good quality for photos.

When checking cartridge prices, remember to check how many millilitres is in the cartridge as well. I had one friend who ditched a printer because the cartridges on the new printer were 'half the price'. Well, yes, they are half the price, but 50% more expensive per millilitre!!!
