Messed my PC up can anyone help?

Was given a pc with newer OPS on it. I had older pc running with win 98 (2nd) but had bits of hardware I couldn't use. Tried to use XP discs that I got given with newer computer. Had problems installing it had to skip a number of files. But got through installation, well thought I had. Re started computer & first page ok then.................

  • try formatting your pc and then re-installing win98. If you've tried to overwrite it then you'll get endless problems

  • unfortunately you will but it's still trying to load some of the WinXP drivers etc which is why you're getting the errors..

You could try booting into Dos and renaming the Windows directory and then re-installing. Not tried it with XP so not sure if it'll work.. Or you could hook up your drive to another computer and copy your data off first and then rebuild it after a format

Reloaded the Sys file to C: & it has allowed me get into the safe mode. Some improvement at least. Was trying to rename windows but I've forgotten the dos instruction so gave the above a try. Can at least get the data off now.
I've relooked at the XP files & it is intended for a new machine. If I format the hard drive could I use the discs with more success?
