I want to become involved with a children's charity, but I don't know which one. I would prefer a small charity that would benefit more and where any money I raise would really make a difference. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Do you want a national charity or a local one? Local ones tend to be smaller so your efforts will have more of an impact. Are you anywhere near Brighton / East Sussex? You could help us!

Hiya, I run Post Pals (www.postpals.co.uk), we send cards, letters and small gifts to brighten seriously ill childrens day (most children are fighting cancer or going through transplants). For every 50p we receive we can send a postcard and create a smile or you can fundraise towards a project, I posted the info about some here http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1483689&highlight=project

After someones sponsored a project and its been sent you can click onto the kids pages and some will say how much they liked it, and often we will have a photograph of a child or two with it to put in our gallery.

    Take care

I'm currently raising money for a local childrens charity based near Oxford (is that anywhere near you?)

They help hearing-impaired children acquire listening and spoken language skills.
:) Thanks to all who post comps! :)
  • Why not raise funds for children who have experienced domestic abuse? Womens Aid also support children and often need funds to help children who may have had to move into refuge in just what they are standing up in.
  • You can search for charities local to you on the Charities Aid Foundation site http://www.cafonline.org/
  • A good place to look for charities is the websire Intelligent Giving or Guidestar. You can find out about local and national charities and get less biased information than the charities own website e.g. how much in every £1 is spent on direct services or charitable objectives. This is useful when researching where you want to donate. But i reckon would be useful for you too. Great stuff that you want to volunteer by the way. I work for a charity and volunteers are our lifeblood.
  • Hi... there's a small children's charity in Goa, India, it's registered in the UK under the charity commission but does all of it's work in India. It's called Children Walking Tall. Some of the best things it does is provide items for the local slum communities, this is often soap, toothpaste/brushes etc which helps the children to keep clean and healthy which is so important for them as they prone to skin conditions, cuts and burns.

They also help get slum and street children into schools, as well as running a day care center where the children can come for food, medical treatment, edication and of course FUN!

    Hope this helps

Have you tried browsing a online children's charity directory for an idea of what charities are maybe local to you and what support they are looking for.

Is there one that you have some kind of link with, maybe something that's affected a child you know? I did some fundraising for Aid for Children with Tracheostomies last year as a friend's little girl has one, they are a very small charity but do great support work. It made me realise that there must be lots of other similar charities out there that don't get many donations just because they are not in the public eye/awareness.
Got married 23rd May 2009, many thanks to all on the Weddings and Anniversaries board for their help and support!
