Scam? Safety for Schools / Fair child ??

I have just had a phone call from someone saying that she was calling from something like 'Fairchild, safety for schools' or something similar. She went on about sending something (leaflets?) to a local school for me (which she could get from my postcode), and she would be sending out the details to me including the invoice.... !!!!

!!!!!!!!! I have never heard of these people, and I have never agreed to anything about sending stuff out for schools - I don't have kids, and this is just not something I woul be remotely interested in supporting.
I told her I didn't recognise anything about what she was telling me, and that I did not want to support this whatever it is. She then started saying that I had agreed to it 6 months ago (no I didn't), so I asked her for the proof anf a copy of my signature agreeing to this whatever it is (I'm still not clear what it relates to).
She then got quite abusive and put the phone down.
Who the hell are these people? Has anyone else had similar phone calls? Or dealings with this group?
I feel very strongly that it is a scam....?...?....

If you read this:- http://209.85.229.132/search?q=cache:R_PgKPjixu0J:www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk/forums/archive/index.php/t-17567.html+Fairchild,+safety+for+schools+scam&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk (post dated April 2008)
you will see that this is a well-documented scam. Most of these companies seem to operate in the Manchester area.
This post at the bottom of that page is particularly relevant:
I am currently dealing with a company that works in a similar fashion. They are called Fairchild Publications, based in Radcliffe, Manchester. They buy in stocks of PHSE style books, ring round for companies to buy a number of them and then send them onto a school of that business' choice. Trouble is, Fairchild are fairly aggressive in demanding payment and then, often as not, the books do not get delivered to the school anyway. They also have someone ringing the targetted business purporting to be a Crime Prevention Officer from the local police service, laying it on thick that if paayment is not received, then the poor little kiddies don't get their books. This is simply not true - no police service works in this wayWhat part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?0 -
Many thanks for this information - I thought it stank of 'Scam' as soon as she started talking!
Is there anywhere I can report this to?
On another note:
It must be Scam-City round here at the moment; I have just had someone at the door telling me that he was here from 'The Electric' and it was about my overpayment of bills(!) I have an intercom, so I asked him for more details. He told me that I had been sent two letters about it ('last year') - yeah, right. I asked again which company he was from, and he said 'your electricity company' (you'd think he's know the name of it if so!)
He then said that I had been overpaying, and he had been sent round to put it right. So I said "That's funny, I've been on the phone to my electricity company this morning, and they didn't mention it." !
Funnily enough, he didn't hang around after that!
:rotfl:
Do I have 'Scam Victim' tattoed on my forehead today or something?

I had a meter reader round the other week. I asked him for ID and he pointed to the logo on his fleece.
He may have been genuine, but ......."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

I have an intercom to the front door, because I am disabled. It is so useful for cold callers like this - I can just speak to them through the intercom and say that I can't some to the door right now, but if they have any information could they please put it through the letterbox.....
Funnily enough nobody ever seems to want to put information through the door ... except the odd copy of the Watchtower, of course!

I asked a meter reader for his i/d about a year ago.
The door was on the chain,so I asked him to pass The i/d through the letterbox.
Instead of just taking it off from around his neck,he bent down and passed it through the letterbox,STILL WEARING IT!! oo the temptation ,I had someone connected to my gas company by the throat!
As my big sis used to say when she was beating me up (playing ,according to her) "Get out of that without moving".0 -
