Plea for help ...

Hi all you techie people,
I have a plea for help for a friend of mine who has lost all his important mail. His set up is like this: He's running a Windows (but I'm not sure which version) and is using AOL for his mail. He had several folders which now seem to have suddenly disappeared. He has spent a long time on the phone with AOL - not cheap - who ended up getting him to delete and reload his account but the folders have not reappeared.
Thinking that his mail may still be somewhere on his hard drive I tried to talk him through a search but each time he selects "search for files & folders" his PC throws up an error message and he can't continue.
We've come to the conclusion that there's something wrong with his PC but I don't have the technical knowledge to even know where to start on that.
He is not very "computer inclined" and really needs to speak to someone on the phone who knows what they're talking about ... which is where you lot come in. Would anyone have the technical knowhow, time and inclination to be able to do this friend of mine a kindness and try to dig him out of his hole?
He has been going through a very rough patch lately - financially and personally - is there anyone out there who can help him please?
If you can, please PM me. If you don't want to leave me your phone number I can give you his if you think you can help.
Many thanks in advance.
