Surely this cannot be right??

Options
My DH was made redundant in December and the company has since gone into Administration.

He has been applying for loads of jobs, had only one Dear John and no success.

He's just been to the Job Centre (AKA Joke Shop) for his 13 weeks interview. Basically he has to prove that he's been looking for work these past weeks. He can do that no bother. He asked what happens after 26 weeks if he hasn't found work, would his Job Seekers Allowance stop and what would happen then. It will stop after 26 weeks and he'll get

Bug ger all! icon_eek.gificon_eek.gif nada nowt nothing.

It so  me off that someone who has worked all their life and paid in can be told sorry mate your 6 months is up you are on your own, yet people who have never worked, don't want to work and have no intention of working stay on benefits for ever?? How so??

I've just returned from maternity leave and gone back full time instead of the part time I'd planned due to him not working.

I've reduced my mortgage to interest only as I can't afford the full amount, but that can't last forever. I'm paying all the bills etc with very little left. We have a 5 1/2 month Daughter too.

Is there an another benefit he can go on should he get to 26 weeks and no job??

TIA

Susie

OMG. I have just been made redundant so if I dont have a job within 6 months I wont get anything even though I have worked since I left school ??

My husband has a poorly paid job which just covers our mortgage and nothing else, so basically no one gives a sh** how much you pay in, if you both dont work you get help if one of you helps and you are worse off you get nothing

Apparently is irrelevant if you've paid in the pot as it were, once the 26 weeks is up its tara, nice knowing you end of wonga!

You are best never having paid in and quite happy to sit watching Jeremy and GMTV while your rent is paid etc!

Means tested benefits are just that; awarded to people who need them, not to people with household income over the threshold.

Its a mean tested benefit, based on household income.

"Paying into the pot" as you put it does not come into it here. Its not a savings account to draw on thats exclusively yours.

As you sday you have a young daughter, presumably you are currently taking Child Benefit out of the pot ? When your husband becomes redundant, than apart from the six months JSA (CB) you may also be entitled to Child Tax Credit as well if you are not already getting it.... ..

He would get New Deal Allowance. This is the same amount as Jobseeker’s Allowance.
  • We are getting Child benefit yes as does every household with children under 18. We are getting CTC but only a minute amount.

Max 2009 - yes I still have this same old attitude as nothing has convinced me otherwise! I personally know people fit for work who earn more on benefits etc than they would working so they say why should I work, I get more on the dole etc, with this that and the other paid for which they would have to pay if they were working.

Somebozo - quite an apt usename I feel!

What is New Deal allowance ?

I have two children and I think I would get tax credit. I am not saying its a savings account, I just expected some assistance seeing as pay tax etc like everyone else. Yet I have a relative who is single and lives in a house FOC and recieves JSA having not had a job in 7 years. Yet I have worked since leaving school, had two children and returned to work after each one and am now told I will get help for 6 months and thats it. I could understand if my husband earnt a mega wage but he earns 15k and we have a mortgage.

I dont expect to live a life of luxury but I thought we would be entitled to something that is if I dont find a job within 6 months which I hope I will

  • Way hay - a post that makes sense at last!

I googled New Deal and had a squizz at it. Its basically retraining to help you find work. What they don't say is there is no money in the retraining pot as my DH found out when he went to the local skills shop to ask when a first aid course was running. We don't know said they as we've run out of money for this year!

    Ho hum . . .
