Bigger drive in Dell D600 or Inspiron 6000 laptop

Does anyone have experience of using a drive with capacity greater than 120GB in either of these laptops? The drives are IDE and not SATA. I've searched around and some say that the BIOS cannot work with drives of this size, but others say that they can, but that there could be problems. I know that they are relatively old laptops but they work fine apart from their relativley small drives. External drives are fine but I really want the portability.
