Channel 5 is FTA so any sat rxer will get it ok BUT you won't get Fiver & Five USA or Sky 3 at the moment -- Dave

That's news to me, if I pull my card out of my Sky receiver, channel 5 goes off and a message stating " Please insert your viewing card " appears.

try any old store card in sky box ,it only uses strip for contact [if you have left sky or obtained a second hand box] sky due to change cards soon to customers , so maybe to counter this.

That's because FIVE transmits an encrypted and a FTA version. The Sky Digibox lists only the encrypted version in its EPG. But you can enter the correct parameters using "Add Channels" menu and view it via "Other Channels" menu.

Oh dear. I'm giving up Sky later this week, I have to do it temporarily, I'm afraid. I've still got the box and the dish, obviously. I thought there was a way to get the freeview channels from a sky box in this situation? I have to admit, I thought I was a little bit techie, but I don't understand a lot of the above posts :o:o:o Can anybody tell me if I can use my old sky box, or how to do what I need to do to do that, phrased for the terminally stupid? Pretty please?

Karmacat, you don't need to do ANYTHING. When your SKY runs out you'll continue to get BBC1,2,3,4 and ITV1,2,3,4. Even if you take your SKY card out of the digibox you'll still get these. Not sure what else you might get.

    Regards, Bill.

Try asking on freecycle for an old sky box, as people are upgrading to HD.

The ongoing confusion that people have between Freeview and Freesat is very disappointing.

Freeview is a terrestrial broadcaster, you get it from an Aerial.

There are two flavours of Freesat:
Freesat from Sky for which you pay a one off fee of £20 for a viewing card ( you don't need this if you are downgrading from Sky's subscription service)
The other Freesat is a BBC/ITV service from the same group of satellites that Sky use, so you can an existing Sky Dish, but you will need a Freesat receiver.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Thanks Bill! I'm hoping I'll get the range of freeview channels.... I'd love to get UKTV History, or whatever its about to be called..... although its freeview, Sky include it in a package, I suppose because its so popular, and I didn't have that package. Still, this is £17.50 a month saved, which is what I need to do right now.

    Thanks!

Sky do have a website that used to explain this service (freesatfromsky), but unbelievably, this now just redirects to their normal Sky Home Page. So, I guess they may provide the service, but no longer advertise it.

    Some information here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freesat_from_Sky

But it seems impossible now to get a full channel line up from anywhere. Unless anybody else knows??
Of course, I may just be talking b****cks!
