Curtain battens

I need new curtain rails for the Lounge and the bedroom and am thinking of putting up curtain battens, not sure if it is worth the bother though. Any thoughts on the advantages of having them?
I've got all the tools, so would just need to buy the materials and paint. Ready primed wood would be easier.

I put up curtain battens , when i have trouble drilling into lintels
( and yes I have used a SDS drill with a good new bit !)
A discrete batten is easily overlooked and makes the job so much easier.0 -
If the old rails worked OK without battens - unless the new rails are going to be different or you are going for heavier curtains, I would leave well alone.
As wallbash says, battens are great when you are expecting trouble in the wall, either because it is too hard or too soft/flaky - then you use the batten to get a fixing in a better area, but if the existing fittings/holes are sound and you are going like for like replacement then no advantage.
The other application is if you need to get more distance off the wall for some reason and you can't do it with rail brackets (or by changing to a ceiling fixing).0 -
If there are already good fixing points, then there seems to be little point in not using them.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0
