Insurance - doesnt cover spay but what about complications

My wee yorkie died 5 days after her spay. She wouldnt eat and could hardly drink but the vet couldnt find anything wrong with her. She had emergery surgery to open up the wound, and they found slight adhesions, but the impression the vet gave was that these were not bad enough to cause the extent of her condition.
I am aware that spays etc cannot be claimed on insurance, but when I rang today about it, they said that any complications from the spay also arent covered.
While the vet cant say why she died, he said if she didnt have the spay she wouldnt be dead.
Do you see any hope for the insurance?
the wording is that exclusions include:

Very sorry to hear about your little dog - I would be asking your vet to state the cause of death, it seems very vague. I suppose there are several possibilities - the most likely being that a complication (bleed or infection) occured, however surely the vet would be aware if this is the case - could it be another pre-existing condition or weakness perhaps?0

As i said apart from a slight adhesion when they opened her, they couldnt see anything else wrong. She had started to drink and keep the water down late yesterday afternoon, and the vet gave her steriods to entice her appetite with the intention of dripping her this morning.
She went down very quick, she went out for a pee, was straining to poo, (which she hadnt done since before the spay last wednesday), and then she just sat down as if in a daze. I lifted her back in and put her to bed because I thought she was just exhausted, but she died 90 mins later.
She was so well on Wednesday after the spay - came home and got straight up onto her chair. It has been such a shock for us.
I suggested to the vet as he cant be sure it was the spay and something else underlying, could he put on it that it could be due to various things. But a clinical history has to be included, and that will show that she was spayed 5 days earlier, so will the insurance company link the 2, or do they have to take the vets diagnosis on it?0 -
oh dear, that's awful - would the vet do a post mortem in the circumstances?0

Very sorry to hear about your loss. IMO, the insurance company will not pay out whatever the vet puts on the certificate (assuming he's willing to take a professional risk in the first place). As you say, they'll see her clinical history and that will be that.0

To be honest I think that too, but I have not asked him to take a professional risk. There is every chance that it was nothing to do with the spay as much as that is was do to with the spay. The only thing is that had the spay not been done it may not have happened. But then again, can they say that with all certainty?0 -
i am really sorry about your doggie
i would question the vet further, ask for a PM and cause of death, he must have some ideas...0 -
We have buried her and I do not want to go through a post mortem. If we have to pay, we have to pay, but I want her to rest now. She was poked and prodded so much in her last few days, she maybe said enough was enough.0

The vet called to say they were not going to charge for any of the aftercare.
When I rang to cancel the insurance, they said I could still claim back the purchase price.
What a turnaround.

Had you considered the possibility that it could have been a reaction to the steroids? It's a very real possibility afterall. The vet just opening her up & looking inside is not really going to tell you an awful lot if it was something that couldn't be seen, like a reaction to certain drugs.0
