Looks to me that it's pointing out that you have old software which has vulnerabilities that could help you to get a virus in the future. If you follow the links it gives, it will tell you what the vulnerability is and how to fix it (it sometimes needs you to upgrade or if the software is no longer supported, it will point this out).

    Not viruses though.

yep, thats exactly what it is.

it found several vulnerabilities in my office 2007 installation and it advised me to install office 2007 SP1 even though it was already installed on my system

As there seems to be about 10 to 15 different patches to each vulnerability and I'm not sure which one to use, would I be better uninstalling office and possibly getting a non-microsoft version of office which I'm sure I've seen on this web site somewhere. Or are Kaspersky being over cautious when they say "highly dangerous"? What would you do?
P.S. This edition of office was supplied on a disc when I bought the pc, so I'm not sure if it's a copy or not.

it should update office via windows updates

  • This is Kaspersky's explanation

    http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208279890

According to this, these are application vulnerabilites identified on a database maintained by Secunia  .

I would suggest ensuring that your Office 2007 applications are up to date because even if you have SP1 installed, Office 2007 is updated regularly (last one I had was dated 11th March)**

As far as I can see, the only way to do this if you do not have the auto updates selected is to do a manual update check here
    http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

BUT bear in mind that it will carry out a validation check to ensure that your Office suite is kosher.

When you are sure that your applications are up to date, you should be able to ignore/delete the Kaspersky warnings.

** As an aside, the version of Excel after installing SP1 was 12.0.6214.1000 the version I have got is now 12.0.6331.5000 so upgrades seem to be happening.

I'm pretty sure that the office suite is 2002 (but not certain!) Now if I do a windows update on office and it turns out it's a copy will it then stop all my updates (the windows xp I'm running now is genuine and I receive all updates on auto update) and stop me using office?

Well I reckon it's your call really.

Dunno if there was an Office 2002- maybe it's XP but the 'office10' folder that Kaspersky is pointing to was used for my old Office 2000 files.(Possibly Office XP too)

I remember having to update Office 2000 seperately from Windows but the new version does an all in one jobby.

Have a read through this to help you regarding validation

    http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx#ID0EVH

You should be able to find your version by clicking on 'Help' then 'About' on any of the applications (Don't work with 2007 though)

Bottom line is if you think that your copy is iffy, then it really is your choice but as Kaspersky is telling you, your Office aplications probably need updating with security fixes.

i'm pretty sure the case is/was that security fixes will continue on hooky copies, functionality updated won't. (ie all the things flagged by kis should get sorted...but any new templates etc...won't be installed)

Phew!!! Took a gamble and downloaded all office security updates, it seems the version of office 2002 was legit. Cleared Kaspersky threat list, re-scanned and all now seems ok. So thanks to all you people in the know, you've put my mind at rest.
