Car Insurance Comparison Websites

I obtained the same quote for our car through 2 comparison websites - same price through the post office - insurer Norwich Union. Their price is 454.82.
However, when I go to Norwich Union their price is coming up at 593.13 and with a larger excess. Is it right that because I'm going through the post office they can get such a difference in premiumf or the SAME insurance??

Yes it is. You could try phoning them to see if they will match the cover and premium - if they won't go with the Post Office one.
Mind though when comparing that Voluntary excess and policy excess are not the same thing.0 -

They are not the same insurance products, but will be based on different rating structures traded though different distribution channels. The post office acts as intermediary for a panel of insurers under a single policy wording and takes commission for that. I have no idea what they do with that comission, but it is not unknown for brokers to put though "broker" discounts by eating into their comission OR work for negative comission on the core insurance product (i.e. making a loss).
There are all sorts of different considerations that will have an impact on how NU has decided to rate the two products you are comparing.
NU have something like 15 or more motor products, plus others they underwrite though joint panel wording "schemes" available though different brokers. Just like UKI (brands include Direct Line, Churchill, NIG etc) you can probably get tens of quotes from essentialy the same underwriter, most at different prices.
There are differences in the terms of the post office's and NU Direct’s policies. For example, the direct debit APR will be different, as are various admin fees and limits for some of the more minor bits of cover like child car seats, audio equipment, sat nav etc. As jonesMUFC says, excesses should be checked with care.0 -
Plus with websites its very easy to put different information into different wesbites.0
