Made to measure curtains with wrong lining?

I ordered some made to measure curtains from a website (huge savings on high street prices!) and they arrived today. I specified black out lining but as soon as I took them out of the packaging I though the lining didn't look like any black out lining I'd seen before. I hung one and I might as well hang a cotton hankie for all the light they were blocking out.
I've compared the lining to other curtains my mum made me years ago and the lining is definitely not the same thickness or stiffness (it used to be her job). I've also compared them to some M&S curtains that are in the spare bedroom and they have similar type of lining. These are definitely not black out curtains as most night I dont bother with them as they make so little difference (theres a blind in that room too)
Apart from the lining I love the fabric and think they are well made.
I've emailed the company but I suspect they may just come back and say that's their black out lining and thats that.
Anyone here know anything about curtain making? Should black out lining always be thick and stiff or am I just expecting too much?

don't know about thick & stiff but they should keep the light out0 -
My blackout linings are definitely thick, ordinary cotton/polycotton linings are thin-ish. You can definitely tell the difference, thick and stiff-ish like you say is a good description.
Maybe they've just made a genuine mistake. However, I wouldn't be surprised if they say that if you've drawn the headings up they wont do anything about them and you should have contacted them first. Hopefully they'll say to send them back and they will take off the thin linings and replace with blackout linings. I would have thought blackout linings were dearer, so if they've put the thinner linings on and they wont change them you may have been overcharged.
Let us know what happens.0 -
The company have replied to my email and offered to take the curtains back and replace the linings or.......I keep them as they are and refund 50% of the price I paid!!
I was tempted by the huge refund but in the end thought about the hassle of getting them relined locally or buying ready made linings and having to alter them to fit myeslf (I know I wouldn't do a good job!) Whole point of getting the made to measure was that I didn't want to do all that.
They are being picked up on Friday so fingers crossed I get them back quickly and can enjoy a nice dark bedroom!!

If it's not too late to think about this, then it's what I did when I bought some ready mades with a normal polycotton lining.
The room wasn't dark enough with just the normal lining, so I bought some separate blackout linings and hung them off the little rings at the bottom of the curtain hooks. Job done!
Might be worth thinking about if the 50% refund will more than pay for some separate blackout linings if you can get them the size you need.
Sorry - just re-read your post and saw you've decided against this (I should read properly in the first place!). Is this because they are big curtains with more than one width so would make it awkward to alter?0 -
I think Twinklefish should post up the name of this company. It seems the price and quality were good, and customer care excellent after they made an error. I would consider using them after reading this thread! :rotfl:Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0

Quite agree Fire Fox. Also perhaps put in the Praise section.0 -
alternatively, take the refund and put up a roller blind as well0

mmm, the thing is twinklefish ordered and paid for what she wanted, so she
must've been happy with price, but,
I was tempted by the huge refund but in the end thought about the hassle of getting them relined locally or buying ready made linings and having to alter them to fit myeslf (I know I wouldn't do a good job!) Whole point of getting the made to measure was that I didn't want to do all that.
send them back and get what you wanted in the first place, as you said the
company could've said, 'sorry, that's our blackout lining', and you would've
accepted that, they seem a decent lot.
Anyway, you would've stuck up your half price curtains, and not been happy
with them, and probably ended up sourcing proper blackout curtains, costing
you more money.0 -
When I've got blackout lined curtains hanging in my bedroom window then I'll name them in a post in the praise section.0

Curtains were collected by courier or Friday and arrived back, with correct linings, yesterday! :T
As promised, have posted a praise. Not many of them flying around here is there!
