I posted over the weekend about my computer - it kept closing down. My husband is now wondering if it could be either not enough memory or something to do with the graphics card. It closes down in the middle of playing games, when my husband uses his screen reader software and when I am working on photos or videos.

Hi,

In my experience unexpected shutdowns that are not virus related generally are caused by faulty or unseated memory. If you can get into the case of your computer then check that all of the various memory sticks, graphics cards etc are seated correctly - it is quite easy to knock them out if the computer gets bashed.

Just out of interest, how much memory do you have in the machine? It shouldn't make any difference - when the computer runs out of memory it simply pages to the hard drive (writes to the hard drive instead of memory) until memory becomes available again. This causes the hard-drive to churn, but should not cause the computer to shutdown.

I am assuming as well that you have an up-to-date virus killer and spyware removal and do regular scans?

I don't know what the dolphin stuff is...but nothing bad there that I can find. Please refer to my previous suggestion regarding overheating...which fits the symptoms far better than malware!

Open CCleaner and go to tools>startup and disable Adobe,Nokia, Sony Ericsson, HP, microsoft office, SoundMan, ATI, Java, Realplayer(Real), QuickTime, AOL, sony and anything else you don't need starting. If you disable something you need you can reenable it as long as you didn't delete it.

Update all graphics drivers by visiting the manufacturer of your graphics card.

Old buggy driver software can cause crashes.

Thank you so much everyone for all your help. My husband and I took the case off last night and removed so much dust!!! I couldn't believe how much there was, but since then it hasn't closed down and is running a lot quieter now. Thank you again for all your help.
