HSBC question for hsbc staff

I applied in January for a basic account straight off with HSBC because I thought it had a debit card with it, but did not.
I asked about applying for a current account and was told that I had to wait 6 months to upgrade my basic account first and then could apply for others.
I phoned complaints and was told the complete opposite and told to apply for a current account.
I phoned applciations and was told again that I could not, but after some discussion, I was told I could.
I applied over the phone and was declined. I have waited for a letter to arrive but none has.
I phoned today and was told that it was declined due to my eligibility i.e. having a basic account and the account A2 accepted with a condition.
Can any HSBC staff throw any light on this? what does A2 mean? and can you have other accounts?
Thanks

To open a current account with HSBC you must have at least £500 a month going into the account. I assume as you have a basic account after 6 months of having £500 a month into the account you can upgrade.0
