Here is an idea to overcome this recession/depression

Economies are consumer lead, therefore people of the UK need confidence to start spending again.
Pouring money into the failing car industry for instance is only a short term solution: What happens when there are still no orders for new cars a few months down the line? Companies and employees will be back to square one with their jobs no more secure than they are now.
An idea for recovery is for the government to give each of the UK's adults, in principle, a sum of around five to ten thousand pounds to be spent only in the UK, within say a six month time limit. These funds may be realised by way of vouchers or coupons.
This money can be spend as an example; paying off a debt or mortgage, buying a new car or household goods (British made or foreign imports), or even holidaying within the UK!
Something along these lines would once again stimulate consumer spending thus kick start the economy. Would be a good balance to boost all sectors from manufacturers to shop workers. This seems preferable to throwing billions at failing individual industiries such as cars, and be a cheaper solution for the tax payer in the long term. Ultimately the tax payer would pay for all this, (as would with bail outs anyway), so it would be good for 'the man on the street' to benefit – for once!
Sure an economic turnaround would be realised in just a couple of months!
Look forward to your comments, thank you

But so much of what is in the shops is imported so a lot of the money would leave the UK rather than be recirculated here further stimulating the economy, and why only those with jobs?

Everyone in the country is a consumer. If you really wanted this to work you should give a smaller amount, but to every adult, regardless of whether they have a job. Arguably those that don't have a job would be more likely to spend it. But where the heck would the money come from anyway?
  • This is a brilliant idea.....bring it on !!! (Chris needs a new car).

We've got 7,000 Honda's parked up close to me, so any chance of getting the production lines up to a high level of output are very slim. That's if there's anybody left to man them once the dust settles.

I'm more concerned that we're not being told the true extent of the mess we're in and how its going to be paid for. An election can't come soon enough !

    and what after 6 months?
your idea of vouchers/coupons is good though--perhaps benefits and other handouts should be made in vouchers redeemable only at certain outlets so that only essentials can be purchased with the dole handed out rather than the everfamous plasma tellies, buckfast and undeserved holidays.

Believe this has been done in several countries already. Others will know the details.

Seems like a great idea to me - if taxpayers' money is going to be doled out to solve our problems, it seems only fair to give it those who paid it, rather than to the big businesses with their fancy-pants tax avoidance schemes (see the Guardian re this - excellent stuff) or banks who are far more likely to hoard it than ordinary consumers are - and who shouldn't get it because they just hand it all out in bonuses to incompetent fools and/or !!!! it up against the wall.

I agree it shouldn't just be taxpayers though - what about all those women with caring responsibilities, who don't pay tax but work non-stop? Or pensioners?

Rather than hand out 'free' chunks of money I would rather stop having the wool pulled over my eyes. Extra duty on petrol and alchohol, extra N.I., higher VAT.
How about not reducing the value of the pound by 28%

In short how about a bit of honesty and competence. Sorry, I am really hacked off tonight. It's the Iraq war all over again, blinding stupidity in the face of the bleedin obvious, and the same endless wrong tune being played.

Here's an idea. How about Brown, and Straw, and all those others spineless liars call a press conference, apologise for their mistakes, and immediately resign. Let's have the election he bottled, and at least vote for someone we er. voted for, rather than some anointed by a previously disgraced politican, who should in their case be serving a sentence at the Hague.

Great idea. I'd use my £10,000 on a deposit on a BTL property.

Yes, good idea. I'd sell my £10k vouchers on ebay for £11k, and keep the cash under my bed.

    (Not a joke!)
I'll have some cheese please, bob.
