I wonder if anyone can help. my company is introducing a new system to re pay us for our mileage claim. i use my own personal car for business and claim back the mileage for a job. What my company is looking in to doing is paying us for "as the crow flies" and not what are odometer says. can they do this?

thanks

Guess they are having problems with folk taking the mick.

You will probably need to do the sums, are they offering a better rate under the new system?

But here is a good example: my mother's house is 10 miles away as the crow flies and over 40 miles by road so I would not be impressed, by their proposal. In some places up here it could be over 100 miles difference!!

The best way to do it that would be fair would be to use routefinder.

    Are they taking the Michael?

If you're going to be worse off then insist on a pool car.

    thanks for the reply.

i will be able to claim back 40ppm. this is like i said as the crow flies. i was not sure if there was some law or something against this. like Hintza said. a job could be 10 miles in a stright line but 40 miles driving.

What are they currently giving per mile?

The question is if you get arsey about it are you likely to be at the front of the queue when the redundancies come round. Hard times for all so you need to be careful how you play it.

There is no way they can short change you this way. Presumeably you are a proper casual/essential car user and using your car as the most economical, efficient way of covering ground in company time. On what grounds could they reimburse you for only part of your journey?
Alternatively, use public transport and see if they would prefer you to be out of reach for most of your working day!

this is crazy, i would be looking for another job to be honest.
why dont they compare peoples mileage against a route planner, this would give an accurate mileage between points.

It is naughty because it does probably work out cheaper for you to use your own car than it does for them to pay out for a car for you. If you are already saving the company money then it's unfair to punish you.

It's never going to work out in your favour as the crow flies, it's either exactly the same or more in true mileage. It would be fairer to reduce the rate they pay you per mile then at least you'd know the % you were losing.

If one employee lived in a straight line from one office but another had to drive 40 miles because they couldn't drive as the crow flies then they would be consistently losing where the other employee would lose nothing.

They can pay you whatever they like whether it's fair or not. If it's more than HMRC limits they must tax it, if it's less than HMRC limits (which it will be) you can claim the difference against tax, but apart from that it's between them and you.

It sounds like a cost cutting loss here - Even a most direct route is some 10-15% further than the crow flying route.

Change your home address??? Use another start point, use somewhere as a postal address if you could (a relative/friend) - or is that me being too dishonest?
